A portrait of the Jazz Age in all of its decadence and excess, Gatsby captured the spirit of the author's generation and earned itself a permanent place in American mythology. Self-made, self-invented millionaire Jay Gatsby embodies some of Fitzgerald's--and his country's--most abiding obsessions: money, ambition, greed, and the promise of new beginnings. It's also a love story, of sorts, the narrative of Gatsby's quixotic passion for Daisy Buchanan. (less)

'I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby's house I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited. People were not invited -- they went there'. Considered one of the all-time great American works of fiction, Fitzgerald's glorious yet ultimately tragic social satire on the Jazz Age encapsulates the exuberance, energy and decadence of an era. After the war, the mysterious Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire pursues wealth, riches and the lady he lost to another man with stoic determination. He buys a mansion across from her house and throws lavish parties to try and entice her. (less)

The mysterious Jay Gatsby embodies the American notion that it is possible to redefine oneself and persuade the world to accept that definition. Gatsby's youthful neighbor, Nick Carraway, fascinated with the display of enormous wealth in which Gatsby revels, finds himself swept up in the lavish lifestyle of Long Island society during the Jazz Age. Considered Fitzgerald's best work, The Great Gatsby is a mystical, timeless story of integrity and cruelty, vision and despair. Now available unabridged on CD, Alexander Scourby delivers Fitzgerald's story in "one of the finest readings ever recorded" (The New York Times). (less)

The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald's portrait of the Jazz Age in all its decadence and excess, is, as editor Maxwell Perkins praised it in 1924, "a wonder." It remains one of the most widely read, translated, admired, imitated and studied twentieth-century works of American fiction. This deceptively simple work, Fitzgerald's best known, was hailed by critics as capturing the spirit of the generation. In Jay Gatsby, Fitzgerald embodies some of America's strongest obsessions: wealth, power, greed, and the promise of new beginnings. The recording includes a selection of letters written by Fitzgerald to his editor, Maxwell Perkins, his agent, Harold Ober, and friends and associates, including Willa Cather, H.L. Mencken, John Peale Bishop and Gertrude Stein. (less)

Jay Gatsby is a man possessed--driven by greed, ambition and, most of all, an unwavering desire for a woman he met before the Great War, when he was poor and she was unobtainableF. Scott Fitzgerald's masterpiece is an extraordinary journey into the heart of the American Dream and out the other side, where the spoils of success do not always suffice. This lively and lavish adaptation from A&E captures the heady swirl of the Jazz Age in all its excess and decadence. As Gatsby reinvents himself in an attempt to buy his way into the social elite of Long Island's Gold Coast, he yearns to rekindle his romance with the woman who stole his heart years before. But when the chance finally arrives, a shadow of tragedy is cast over what Gatsby long-imagined would be his triumphant moment. (less)

This documentary was produced to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the publication of The Great Gatsby on April 10th, 1925. "Midnight in Manhattan" explores the dark, turbulent life and creative spirit of "Gatsby"'s writer, F. Scott Fitzgerald. It covers his college days at Princeton where he wrote rather than doing coursework and ended up as a dropout.. His unsucessful marriage to Zelda Sayre who eventually was diagnosed with schizophrenia and committed to multiple hospitals is also addressed. The documentary explores the difficult friendship between Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, which was strained by the mutual dislike between Hemingway and Zelda as well as Hemingway's disgust with how Fitzgerald often changed and twisted his stories to sell to magazines for cash. His final days were affected by this need for cash. He remained married to Zelda despite her residence in mental hospitals, and he was often trying to earn money for her medical bills and to support his alcholism which had grown worse and made him increasingly more ill. This exposure of the desperate nature of his last years, living with his mistress and suffering multiple heart attacks, dispels the mythology created by Fitzgerald which glamorized the Jazz-Age and his alcoholism. The program includes contributions by the author's granddaughter Eleanor Lanahan, and writers Hunter S. Thompson, George Plimpton and Jay McInerney. It presents a fascinating portrait of this most enduring and complex of American icons. (less)

This third film version of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic 1925 novel was one of the most hyped movies of the summer of 1974. Robert Redford stars as self-made millionaire Jay Gatsby, who uses his vast (and implicitly ill-gotten) fortune to buy his way into Long Island society. Most of all, Gatsby wants to win back the love of socialite Daisy Buchanan, now married to 'old money' Tom Buchanan. Calmly observing the passing parade is Nick Carraway, Gatsby's best friend, who narrates the film. (less)
